Since 2010, we have held collaborative ‘singing-for-health’ projects in partnership with Refugee Action, British Red Cross, Rainbow Haven, Women Asylum Seekers Together (WAST) and other refugee drop-in centres. Refugees and asylum seekers have often experienced emotional distress or trauma as a result of their experiences of war, persecution, and organised violence in their home countries. Many have spent years living in refugee camps and face many challenges integrating into a new and sometimes hostile community. Our work provides a stress relieving social activity that immediately transcends language barriers and celebrates the varied cultural heritage of all participants, while providing opportunities for personal expression, spreading a positive vibe in their local community through music and performance.
